This will be a great introduction to the real Sicily, exploring the charming towns of Savoca and Forza D'Agrò with your local driver who so proudly calls these areas home.
Starting from Messina port you will visit Castelmola, a medieval hill town above Taormina with breath taking views of the sea and of Mt. Etna, then drive to get to the art town of Savoca. This will literally feel like taking a step back in time. Although the name Savoca did not appear until 1415, the town probably dates back to the first half of the 12th century when a Norman Fortress was built. Savoca is not a touristic town, but a very simple every day "local" town set on the hillside of the foothills of the S. Peloritiani.
What makes it different to the other towns? This is where Al Pacino and Cast shot the GodFather movies. To follow their footsteps and to visit the places that were so often shown throughout the movie will bring back many memories. While in town "a must" is the stop for a Lemon Granita at the famous bar "VITELLI" on the corner of the town, one of Francis Ford Coppola's favorite spots, and also seen many times throughout the film. Then you will make your way to the church of St. Lucy where the scene of the wedding between Apollonia and Michael was shot!
After Savoca you will visit Forza d'Agrò which is without a doubt one of the best examples of a typical village of the Province of Messina which still preserves its medieval street layout and has incredible views from all sides of the town. Here you will find the perfect mix of tradition, culture, history and art.
You will then drive to the highlights of Taormina. Our introduction to Taormina will take you around the beautiful town of Taormina, situated on a rocky plateau on the slopes of the steep Monte Tauro, dominating the Ionian coast from Capo Sant'Andrea to Capo Taormina with the Etna Volcano rising majestically in the background. The downtown centre represents a variety of historical periods, from the early Greek settlements and the Roman age, to the remains of Byzantine and Medieval constructions up to the 15th Century Catalan buildings and 17th Century Baroque churches and Palaces. A visit to the Greek Theatre is not to be missed, same as a simple stroll down the main street "Corso Umberto" with its art and designers shops, Baroque churches and Palazzi.

Mount Etna is one of the world's most active volcanos, majestic and fascinating, it was considered by the Ancient Greeks to be the realm of Vulcan, God of fire. Unpredictable and ever-changing, this mountain rises well over 6500 feet above sea level, making it the highest mountain in Europe after the Alps.
You will pass through the town of Giarre and then through the village of Zafferana before arriving at the Crater named Silvestri which is about 6000 ft above sea level. The strange, lunar landscape is well worth the stop for some fascinating photos during your tour.
Right after this visit you will drive to the town of Taormina, truly one of the most beautiful places in Sicily.
This charming and picturesque town has been a world famous resort since the end of the 19th century. Known for its unspoiled natural beauty and climate as well as its excellent hospitality, the inhabitants have managed to preserve their local culture and ancient history while providing efficient modern organization. Enjoy the outdoor cafès and maybe a delicious lunch tasting some of the local specialties.
Here you will tour the ancient theater built by the Greeks during the 3rd century BC, but later changed into an amphitheatre by the Romans. From here you can see a magnificent view of the bay of Naxos and Mount Etna, so be ready to take out your cameras again!
At this point, your driver will bring you to the Palazzo Corvaia, built in the 14th and 15th centuries, represents several different architectural styles - Arab, Gothic, and Norman. Finally you will admire the ruins of a small Roman theatre, which is located just behind the nearby church.

This shared shore excursion will start with a visit to Acireale, a beautiful ancient town whose foundation was lost in time but remains rich in legend. According to greek mythology, the name Acireale in fact comes from the shephard Aci who Galatea fell in love with. Jealous of Aci, Cyclope kills him and a river formed in the place where he was murdered. Acireale is the modern name given to this city by the King of Spain in 1642.
Many monuments you will be admiring during your vist of Acireale date back to the Baroque perios, such as the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, a beautiful Baroque church first built in 1550, that contains many important works of art, the Basilica Collegiata of Saint Sebastian and The Cathedral which is a must if you want to admire many works of art by the native artist Pietro Paolo Vasta. We also raccomend you take a walk along the Corso Umberto, the most important street in the city, where you can admire many prominent palaces and of course taste the famous granita.
You will then continue your tour going south to Catania, a well known city in Italy due to the variations of landscape within its borders: coastline, plains, and mountains. Situated at the base of Mount Etna, Catania has been destroyed seven times by the volcano and earthquakes in the course of written history. This is the reason why there are very few remaining traces of the Greek and Roman periods in the city of Catania. Nevertheless, you will be able to see the remains of the 2nd century Roman Theater and Amphitheater, the Odeon from the 3rd century, and the thermal baths, as well as the acqueduct.
At this point you will visit Aci Castello and its Cathedral of Saint Agatha. Although the main part of the church was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693, it is still a rare example of the Sicilian Baroque style that can be seen in Catania. Via Dei Crociferi is definetely one of the most beautiful streets in Catania and will be your last stop in town before moving on to your next and last stop: The Cyclop's Riviera.
This legendary coast, made up of lava stone from Etna's numerous eruptions, is picturesque with its contrast to the deep, limpid sea. This shore excursion will take you to the important towns along the way, like Acireale with its beautiful historic buildings and the quaint fishing village of Aci Castello, or Acitrezza and Acicatena.
After an unforgattable drive along the Riviera your driver will take you and the group back to the Port of Messina to board your ship.
